A radical dissection of the human figure through the ‘mental gaze’. The human form undressed by the psychological mind. Examining individual’s relationships to their own bodies to reveal the soul in figure form. Our bodies are not just shapes and forms. They are not objects separate from us. They are we, and we are they.

Press Release | Playgrounds a solo exhibition by Kit King coming to Athen B. Gallery in Oakland California August 12th confronts the void between body and mind, by physically manifesting the mental form, and examining how we see figure through conscious thought. The exhibit offers a realization of a “truer” form that captures both the physiological and psychological aspects of our humanness, in an effort to bridge the gap between the two.

How do we cope with the conflation of existing as mental beings in a corporeal form? The answer is often with a detachment- “we” become separate from our bodies. Ask people what words they associate with their bodies (something King took to social media to find the answer to), the response is resoundingly removed. We speak about our bodies as though they are a separate entity, unlinked to us, that we are forced to live with, or live within. But our bodies ARE us. Our physical form can shape our thoughts and emotions. The physical form we take contributes to our conscious and subconscious mind, and how we respond to the physical world around us. Despite this, there is a monstrous gap between the two sides. A void formed from this detachment. If we could examine the psychological affects on the physical self, what would this look like? How malleable is our consciousness form through a physical plane? If we could reshape our figure to visually articulate what we feel inside what would this look like? These are the questions PLAYGROUNDS serves to undress.

The achromatic paintings, drawings, and photography works, are the manifestation of this conflict, with anonymous figurative works portrayed in ways that seem inhuman, that are both anyone and no one. Illustrating the disconnect we seem to have with our bodies, King’s figures take on otherworldly shapes and poses, and imitate object, while others have been fully rendered only to have been cut into pieces, dissected, reconfigured, and manipulated. Through the eyes of King’s models we examine form, and what figure becomes when seen through a psychological lens- the multitude of shapes that not only form takes, but also the individual ways in how we see it. What figure means to different people, and the universal struggle amongst them.

“Each person I spoke with, photographed, or painted was apprehensive and overrun with insecurities.
We all had to overcome hang-ups we had about our bodies. When confronting our own void, it forced us to open up, which ultimately lead to being more comfortable in our own skin, and how we allow our bodies to interact and be seen not just by others, but ourselves. Once this level of comfort and acceptance is established, one can begin to look deeper at the human form as well as the human condition. We begin to see what figure looks like when freed from the restraints of insecurity and scrutiny. This show provides a place for bodies and minds to exist without that scrutiny. Not just a celebration of form, but a celebration of us- for not just the beautiful parts, but for the honest and messy bits too.”

The opening reception of Playgrounds by Kit King will be August 12th at 7pm in Downtown Oakland with Athen B. Gallery and if free to the public.
