Strike Iron (formerly Albino Afrobeat) is co-billng at The Chapel with Otis McDonald on September 21st. Covering the spectrum from vintage funk and Afrobeat to 80's dance party and old school soul, this will be the can't miss local live dance party of the fall.
After a period of metamorphosis, Strike Iron has emerged in full force with their unique blend of Afrobeat, Funk, Jazz Fusion and Avant Garde sensibilities. The band will feature a suite of brand new original music by musical director and all around mad scientist Michael Mark Bello (of Ernest Ranglin, Phil Lesh and Friends). Consisting of a six piece horn section, two percussionists, two guitars, electric bass, and a drummer, all of which are top Oakland and San Francisco session players, Strike Iron brings original dance music and electric energy to any stage they play. Be prepared for face melting, booty shaking, and the thickest of grooves all night long.
From the mind and ears of producer/ multi- instrumentalist Joe Bagale comes a sound that is fresh but tangibly rooted in nostalgia. When taking a listen, one may recall the soul of the 60’s, the funk of the 70’s, the pop of the 80’s, and the boom bap of the 90’s. Whatever it may be, Otis McDonald is the sound of an artist who manifests a lesson in versatility and growing perspective.
Starting out as a studio experiment, Otis McDonald was developed over a three month period which found Bagale writing short snippets of music, playing all of the instruments, sampling those snippets, playing more instruments and eventually creating entirely new songs.
In 2015, Bagale put out 30 tracks for free under the Otis McDonald moniker. Released as copyright free music exclusively through the YouTube audio library, these tracks have been downloaded over 3 million times, streamed over 10 million times, and have appeared in over 3 million YouTube videos.
In 2016, the Otis McDonald live experience was formed, featuring some of San Francisco and Oakland’s finest players. He's recorded at least 30 new free tracks to be released for the YouTube audio library.
