We're excited to be back at Drake's Dealership for another First Friday extravaganza! For Open Session 53 we’ll be collaborating with the local funk duo Heat Vision & Jack, with Geneva Harrison on drums and Josh Pollock on vocals and guitar. With a few super funky arrangements from TV and other media, this will be a super fun session. Join us!

TRANSPORTATION SUGGESTIONS: It's a safe two-block walk from 19th St. Oakland BART, and it'll be First Friday, so street parking will be very difficult. We strongly suggest public transit, biking, and ride-sharing, as possible. Double bassists and other large instruments can unload and re-park elsewhere where possible.

Repertoire, instrumentation, and schedule are as follows, with conductor David Möschler:

7:00–7:30 p.m. — Lalo Schifrin — Theme from Mission: Impossible (chamber orchestra with Heat Vision & Jack)

INSTRUMENTATION: 1 flute, 1 clarinet (B-flat), 1 bass clarinet, 1 bassoon, 2 horns (F), timpani, 2 percussion (triangle, bongos), piano, strings

7:30–8:00 p.m. — Theme from S.W.A.T. (concert band with Heat Vision & Jack)

INSTRUMENTATION: 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets (B-flat), 1 bassoon, 1 alto sax, 1 tenor sax, 1 bari sax, 1 horn (F), 2 trumpets (B-flat), 2 trombones, 1 euphonium, 1 tuba, percussion I (sus cymbal, tambourine) percussion 2 (snare drum, bass drum)

8:00–8:30 p.m. — Isaac Hayes — Theme from Shaft (string orchestra with Heat Vision & Jack)

INSTRUMENTATION: keyboard, tambourine, strings, electric bass (optional)

8:30–9:15 p.m. — Takashi Tateishi — Dr. Wily's theme from Mega Man II (full orchestra with Heat Vision & Jack)

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B-flat), 2 bassoons, 4 horns (F), 2 trumpets (B-flat), 2 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, drum set, 3 percussion (suspended cymbal, triangle, vibraphone), strings

9:15–10:00 p.m. — We’re holding this spot for one other special surprise piece if we can get hold of an arrangement in time. We’ll send an email announcement if we do!

SHEET MUSIC for upcoming open sessions can always be found on Google Drive at:

Reference recordings can be found for all pieces on YouTube or the Facebook event.

Please bring a music stand and battery-powered stand light if you have one (it'll get dark!). We'll have chairs, sheet music, and water for the musicians! There will be free beer tokens for players of drinking age.

The sign-up deadline for all sections is Sunday, August 20. Once that has passed, expect an email from your Awesöme Ambassadors with specific info and part assignments within the week (check your spam filters if this is your first session). Email your ambassadors if you haven't heard back by August 27. (Please be patient—they have a lot of information to collect before emailing everyone.) Their information can be found at
