Winner of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival NEXT Audience Award, come to the Roxie for your last chance to catch Gook in theaters in San Francisco! From Director Justin Chon, this compelling and gritty feature tells the story of the ‘92 LA Riots from a unique Korean-American perspective. Following the Roxie’s showing of the Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992, come see another take on this important cultural event.
Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers, struggle to keep their father’s shoe store afloat in Los Angeles. They’re the unlikely pals of Kamilla, a sassy, 11-year-old African American girl from the neighborhood, who ditches school to secretly hang out at their store. When Kamilla’s brother Keith discovers that she’s spending time with “those gooks,” he plots revenge on them. Meanwhile, on the day of the announcement of the Rodney King verdict, larger acts of violence loom as the LA riots move closer to their world.
Join us for a lively conversation on Sunday with the filmmaker and a local entertainment writer who lived in Koreatown during the LA Riots.
