Albert Falzon’s first film reveals the revolutionary and pioneering spirit of Australian surfers who took the sport to a radical new level.
In this fascinating portrayal of the then-emergent new age hippie lifestyle, a handful of barefoot and homeless surfers embrace a back-to-the land mindset and live for nothing but surfing and communalism. Morning of the Earth captures them in their element, living in spiritual harmony with nature, making their own boards (and homes) as they travel in search of the perfect wave across Australia, Bali, and Hawaii. This series of rare surf films explores how the 1960s and 1970s surf movement shaped culture around the world. From the shores of California to the Northern Beaches of Australia, these films examine what serious surfers will go through to find the perfect wave. Guest curated by Jeremy Rossen, assistant curator of the Harvard Film Archive.

«For many, the surf film genre began with wholesome depictions of beach parties, beach blanket bingo, and surfing à la Gidget or Jan & Dean in the late 1950s. Yet the world of surf films is wild and dense—stretching all the way across the Pacific.

At the heart of all of the films in this program is an underlying message about the sanctity of nature, a DIY spirit and the desire to create a world of one’s own. The renewed interest in early surf culture perhaps stems from a resistance to the commercialization, corporate sponsorship and rampant consumerism in both surfing and society as running contrary to the sport’s humble beginnings.»
