How can Buddhist teachings help us understand and respond to the systemic and immense suffering of racism? This daylong will explore that question. Through gathering to study, reflect, and dialog within community, we will gain insight about how systems of racism and privilege operate, and learn ways we can support skillful change. This is a daylong for white practitioners, specifically, to build awareness and knowledge.

Conversations on racial injustice can bring healing, understanding and change. This daylong on white awareness hopes to contribute to a wider societal movement by serving the need for conversation among white people, with the larger goal of supporting practitioners in understanding power, privilege and oppression as a form of suffering that can be met with our Buddhist practice. This can prepare the ground for effective inter-racial dialogues.

Optional: Continue to deepen your understanding and your own practices of dissolving inner bias with the follow-on White Awake class series, held five Tuesdays after this daylong. See more info here: againstthestream.org/event/white-awake-2/2018-01-16/

Vinny Ferraro is a Dharma teacher and a nationally recognized leader in designing & implementing interventions for at-risk youth. In 1987, he began volunteering his time to be of service. He went on to to help establish Dharma Punx in the mid 90’s. In 2001, he began teaching for Challenge Day, teaching emotional intelligence and other social skills, eventually becoming their Training Director, and leading workshops to more than 100,000 youth. He then became the Training Director for the Mind Body Awareness Project, a non-profit that teaches meditation to the incarcerated. He is a Guiding Teacher for Against the Stream, and for 12 years has led a Friday night meditation group in San Francisco. He doesn’t like talking about himself in the 3rd person.

She is the founding teacher of Insight Meditation Center of the Pioneer Valley. She is co-author of the book, A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO INSIGHT MEDITATION and a contributor to Women Practicing Buddhism; American Experiences, edited by Peter Gregory and Susanne Mrozik.

She was the first out queer teacher with Eric Kolvig to lead insight meditation retreats for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Queer community. She also leads ‘Uncovering the Heart Retreats’ integrating the practice of awareness of the social dynamics of inequity with the dharma practice of liberation.

He teaches at Spirit Rock Meditation Center and leads intensive meditation retreats internationally. His teaching is influenced by both Burmese and Thai streams of the Theravada tradition as well as Zen and Tibetan Buddhist practice.
