ArtSpan Artist Professional Development Workshop Series invites you to Art Materials & Archival Conservation (for a variety of mediums) -Present by Emilie van der Hoorn of van der Hoorn Art and Archival Conservation.

Workshop Outline to include:

Stretcher vs. Strainer
Types of wood and bars, general construction
Gesso, how and why
Linen vs. Cotton

Types of wood
Types of construction (panel, cradle, laminated, etc.)

Paints and Pigments
Why are some colors much more expensive than others
Grades of paint (student, artist, etc.)
Oil vs. Acrylic
Varnish and other coatings

Preparing sheets for wet treatment

About the Presenter:
Emilie van der Hoorn an art conservator specializing in works on paper. She completed undergraduate degrees in Art History and Fine Art before pursuing a masters degree in Art Conservation at Northumbria University in the UK. Since graduating she has worked in public institutions and private studios including the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Royal BC Museum in Vancouver, and the Nationaal Archief in the Netherlands.

Van der Hoorn Art and Archival Conservation assists private clients, museums, archives, and collectors in the Bay Area and beyond with their art collections. In addition to the conservation of works on paper, the studio does a range of preventative work to ensure the longevity of art and objects. This includes custom storage, matting, and housing solutions for books, documents, photographs, scrolls, and other paper artworks. She also does collection surveys, condition reporting, disaster response plans, and housekeeping manuals.

About ArtSpan Artist Workshops:
ArtSpan presents monthly 90-minute workshops designed to sharpen business and financial literacy for professional artists, prepare artists for exhibiting work inside and outside the studio, and encourage community between fellow artists and the public. Through these community events ArtSpan creates a platform for artists to thrive, fostering a Bay Area that values the arts.

Workshops are free to attend for all ArtSpan Artists Members. A $20 suggested donation is requested from Non-Member attendees. No one turned away for lack of funds.
