New York–based artists Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder are back at the Exploratorium to transform the Kanbar Forum into a monumental camera obscura. At Obscurus Projectum, a ray of light enters through an aperture and strikes the screen, a cinematic spectacle of the natural world transcribing in muted form the delicate play of time and movement. The obscure and indistinct image provides an abstract tabula rasa that invites the observer to activate their liminal thresholds of perception in the age of overexposed screens.

Sandra Gibson + Luis Recoder are renowned artistic collaborators whose installation works and performances have been featured at countless international institutions and festivals. Using film projectors, celluloid strips, deviating lenses, and manual interventions, they create ephemeral light sculptures that transform the projection room into an immersive experience. In 2013 as a commission by Mad. Sq. Art they created Topsy-Turvy, a large-scale, walk-in camera obscura pavilion that flipped Manhattan's iconic Flatiron building upside-down. Their installations and live performances have been featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art, REDCAT, Ballroom Marfa, Sundance Film Festival, and the Serralves Foundation.
