We are getting deep in qualifying for the Oakland Poetry Slam team 2018. This years nationals will be in Chicago! Come out to Slam or perform in the Wide Open Mic or just to watch and support your local art! This weeks feature is Camila Elizabet, Woman, undergraduate student, activist, poet, banshee, and loca. At twenty-six years old, Camila is of Chicana and Mescalero Apache heritage. Born in Sacramento, but raised in San Diego, Camila has slammed since the age of fourteen and more recently competed in the 2017 National Poetry Slam on Team Oakland. She uses poetry as a medium of confronting issues such as family incarceration, addiction, violence, trauma, sexism, and racism. Camila has worked with communities of color and students in workshopping spoken word poetry and performance techniques for almost ten years. She strongly believes that spoken word is a form of decolonized, radical pedagogy necessary for engaging needed conversation, laughter, healing, and unapologetic resistance in communities of color.
