2101 Webster St @ 22nd, Oakland, California 94612
The Octopus Literary salon presents an evening of Bay Area Singer-Songwriters with Matt Jaffe, Rob Jamner and E.G. Phillips
7pm • $5-10
Cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, MATT JAFFEE started taking music (a little bit) more seriously when JERRY HARRISON of Talking Heads offered to produce his first record.
Since then, Matt has churned out more songs than he can remember the words to, oversaturated the market with gigs (opening for the likes of MAVIS STAPLES, WILCO, and BLUES TRAVELER), and collaborated with the likes of CHUCK PROPHET and TOM HIGGENSON of the Plain White T's.
Having toured the country playing places like The Fillmore and your local hipster's basement, Matt is back in the studio with his band, readying his third record and preparing to bring the guitar gospel back to the masses.
ROB JAMNER is an indie rock songwriter and poet. His music sounds like what would happen if JEFF BUCKLEY and SIMON & GARFUNKEL went to see THE SHINS perform, and it inspired them to make an album together. He sings his stories in a clear, high voice, dancing on distorted jazz chords and gliding over earnest ballads. In his lyrics, he explores the depth of his hopes and anxieties, always emerging with a glimmer of optimism.
Originally from Kentucky, Rob was creative writing major at Oberlin College. There he performed shows at local venues like Slow Train Café and the Cat in the Cream as well as the Oberlin Folk Fest. His poetry and prose were included in the college’s «The Plum Creek Review.” Rob approaches songwriting with the same passion as the kid who carried a stack of books home from the library.
Rob released his first EP, Lost in the Clouds, in 2015 and is preparing to record his first full-length record for release in 2018.
E.G. PHILLIPS is a San Francisco based songwriter who creates lyric driven songs with his own special blend of whimsy and cinematic imagery which he uses to give a wry take on dealing the longings of the heart and the madness of existence. He comes from a country called the Midwest, has a degree in Geography, and his favorites include BOB DYLAN and THE KINKS as well as DUKE ELLINGTON and that crowd (a touch of TOM LEHRER might also be in the mix). „Ducks With Pants“ is the name of his so-called fake band.
Phillips has been the „Songwriter-in-Residence“ at Bazaar Cafe (September 2015 and April 2017) and a featured performer at San Francisco venues such as the Hotel Utah, Neck of the Woods, PianoFight and Cafe International. For the past two years, E.G. has hosted “E.G. Phest» (most recently at the Lost Church) where a dozen or so Bay Area musicians cover one of his songs for his birthday, giving them their own distinct spin and bringing the local music community together in what is really a celebration of song, the art of performance and friendship.
In early 2017 Phillips released his first official album «Fish from the Sky» — a collection of well worn originals he's performed around the Bay Area for many years.
