Join Dr. Alison Ash and Lily Zheng for the Oakland book launch of Gender Ambiguity in the Workplace: Transgender and Gender-Diverse Discrimination!
This book dives into the stories of 25 gender-diverse people to reveal the multitude of ways discrimination impacts those who don’t fit the gendered mold of the workplace — and the multitude of ways gender-diverse people plan their lives in response. Fired for correcting misgendering. Hiding a trans identity to keep a job. These stories bring to life the twin realities of trans discrimination and trans resilience amid the “progressive” San Francisco Bay Area but go further than a shallow documentation. What are the factors that might predict discrimination, and at what points in the employment process does discrimination occur? What differences exist between the discrimination experiences of trans men, trans women, and nonbinary people — and why? The answers to these questions begin to lift the veil on how gender itself works in our workplaces and social lives, and call into question some of the assumptions that we all make about the world around us. Transgender and gender-diverse discrimination is not inevitable. The policy recommendations that close out Gender Ambiguity in the Workplace suggest a range of policies and best practices to empower lawmakers, managers, and everyday people who care to make a difference.
At this launch event, the authors will provide crucial insights for achieving trans economic well-being, read excerpts from their book, and conclude with a live audience Q&A and book signing. Light refreshments will be served. Come to the Oakland launch of Gender Ambiguity in the Workplace, and learn why this book is a must-have for today’s readers. All are welcome!
