THE DARK CRYSTAL @ 1:00 & 7:00pm
For this story of good vs. evil, Jim Henson and company created an entire non-human world using sophisticated marionettes, radio-controlled animatronics and full body-suit creations. Not just stunning technically but one of the few screen creations of an entire self-contained fantasy otherworld – it leaves today’s CGI creations in the digital dust. (1982, 93 min, 4K DCP)

+ THE LORD OF THE RINGS @ 2:50 & 8:50pm
Decades before Peter Jackson unleashed his Oscar-winning vision of Middle Earth, filmmaker Ralph Bakshi created this animated opus dramatizing the first half of J.R.R. Tolkein’s fantasy epic. Using rotoscopic animation and other vivid techniques, Bakshi tells the story of the creation of the mythic One Ring, and the otherworldly beings who assemble to shield it from the forces of evil. The voice cast includes John Hurt as Aragorn and Star Wars’ Anthony Daniels as Legolas. (1978, 132 min, DCP)

+ WATERSHIP DOWN @ 5:15pm
With this passion project, screenwriter-producer-director Martin Rosen brilliantly achieved what had been thought nearly impossible: a faithful big-screen adaptation of Richard Adams’s classic British dystopian novel about a community of rabbits under terrible threat from modern forces. With its naturalistic hand-drawn animation, dreamily expressionistic touches, gorgeously bucolic background design, and elegant voice work from such superb English actors as John Hurt, Ralph Richardson, Richard Briers, and Denholm Elliott, Watership Down is an emotionally arresting, dark-toned allegory about freedom amid political turmoil. (1978, 92 min, 35mm)
