Join the stunning and vital Bay Area poets Nancy James, Vernon Keeves III, and James Siegel for a night of original poetry. Musical guest Jacques Ibula! Hosted by the one and only Paul Corman Roberts and cosponsored by Nomadic Press. All in the comfort of the awesome and accommodating, tasteful and tasty, Octopus Literary Salon.
James J. Siegel is the author of the poetry collection «How Ghosts Travel» from Spuyten Duyvil Press, which was a finalist for the Ohioana Library Book Award. He lives in San Francisco where he hosts and curates the monthly Literary Speakeasy at Martuni’s piano bar, which showcases Bay Area authors, poets, and songwriters. His work has appeared in several journals including The Cortlan...d Review, Assaracus, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, The Good Men Project, and more.
Nancy Johnson James is an Oakland based educator and artist. Her poetry is concerned with blackness, nature within the urban landscape, justice, and being human.
Vernon Keeve III is a black and queer writer from Virginia, and a high school teacher in Oakland, CA. He has read his poetry at the SF Poetry Jazz Festival, the Berkeley Poetry Festival, and the Oakland Book Festival. He has poetry and essays published in Ishmael Reed's Konch Online Journal, Black Girl Dangerous, Entropy, and Foglifter, and Blues Arrival: Stories of the Queer Black South and Migration; received the Zora Neale Hurston Award from Naropa University in 2012. His book of poetry and essays, Southern Migrant Mixtape, will be released in January of 2017 with Nomadic Press.
Jacques Ibula plays an eclectic mix of blues, folk, soul, and reggae – beautiful melodies blended with searing messages that give voice to his passion for life and belief that “…we are defined by the inner striving of our hearts more than our outward struggles, as in between lays a story worth sharing.” Released in 2009, his first EP, “Zanzibar”, is a true testament of the enduring and transformative forces of music in his own life’s journey in defining his voice and music.
